3 Ways to Homeschool in California
Are you considering homeschooling this coming school year? Here are some basics to homeschool in California. If you’re not in CA, don’t worry! I can make your research easier by helping you with resources.
Let me know if I can provide more information on Homeschooling (any state!).
1. Independent Study:
This can be done via a satellite program from a private school or charter school.
It is done in conjuction to a private school or charter school. The way it works is that you enroll in their school and follow their curriculum.
Depending on the school you enroll to, their curriculum and structure will be more or less flexible.
For example, if you’re working on a science lesson and they’re covering types of animals, you can deviate from types of animals to for example, habitats.
Usually, they will ask for certain lessons (Ex. Lesson 1-4) to be turned in by a deadline.
PRO: You will have a comprehensive curriculum that you can (potentially) modify and add to. I would recommend Oak Meadow, as its a flexible, secular and progressive curriculum.
CON: Some deadlines to follow.
2. Create a home-based private school:
Parents file an affidavit to create a private homeschool and keep records of attendance.
In the state of California (and Texas), you need to cover all core subjects to meet the requirements.
PRO: No deadlines, highly flexible and open.
CON: No curriculum but you get to choose your own or create one from scratch.
3. Hire a private teacher:
The teacher you hire must hold a CA teaching credential.
Teacher is responsible for keeping attendance and records.
PRO: No need to file an affidavit and someone helps you with the curriculum.
CON: Can be costly.
